BUILT FOR OUR SIDE OF THE LAKE
A clearer picture.
One source at a time.
SurfsUP brings together the resources we use to check the Wisconsin shore. Built by Zach, for the days when there might be something worth chasing.
Start with the wind.
For Lake Michigan, wind speed and direction are the first things to watch. North Michigan adds offshore wind and waves; South Michigan Spotter and Rawley Point East add measured waves. Coastal stations provide local wind context.
Wind-only and wave-only stations are both useful. Wave height, period, and temperature appear when available, each with its own observation time. Missing does not mean zero.
Observed vs. forecast
Observations are measurements from a station at a particular place and time. They stay tied to that time even when you select a future forecast.
Forecasts are model or forecast-service estimates. “Now” means the forecast for the current hour, not a beach observation. Windy has its own independent forecast controls.
Station measurements older than two hours are marked stale. Forecasts retrieved over three hours ago, or whose latest refresh failed, are shown as stale and do not receive a rating. Retrieval time is when this app checked the source, not when the underlying model was run.
Local knowledge still matters
Offshore wave heights are not breaking-wave heights. Piers, shelter, wind shifts, and local exposure can change what you find at the water. The original spot notes are a starting point; dated field reports help fill in the picture.

EXPERIMENTAL / VERSION 2
A rating you can question.
Useful estimates should come with an explanation. These ratings are transparent heuristics, still awaiting calibration against real sessions.
Wind setup
Compares wind direction with the spot’s configured fetch preferences, scales with wind strength, and accounts for excessive wind and gustiness. Calm wind cannot get a high setup rating. Useful with wind data alone; it describes building potential.
Surf estimate
Requires wind plus modeled wave height, period, and direction. Combines wave energy, shoreline exposure, period, and onshore/cross-shore/offshore surface conditions. Flat modeled water cannot receive a favorable surf score.
Know the limits
Confidence is separate from the number. Buoys provide context and are not silently substituted for a beach forecast. Wind history, precise fetch distance, local shelter, and wave arrival timing are not yet modeled.
Bands: 0–34 poor · 35–59 mixed · 60–79 promising · 80–100 favorable. Sorting by wind setup compares wind scores; sorting by surf estimate compares only available surf estimates. Spots without the relevant rating appear last.
